OPPN SEEKS RELEASE OF DETAINED J&K LEADERS
23 August 2019
Opposition parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress and DMK, held a joint protest at Jantar Mantar here, demanding immediate release of leaders of Jammu and Kashmir, who have been in detention for days since Article 370 was abrogated in the state and the state bifurcated and made a UT.
The parties issued a resolution, saying that a chilling crackdown on free
speech was being witnessed in J&K. It read: "We stand by the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their difficult hour. The decisions taken by the Union Government to impose a complete communication blackout and the continued detention of former chief ministers and political leaders, members of civil society and innocent citizens running into thousands are matters of serious concern....There has been a chilling crackdown on free speech and the right of assembly. Such actions go against the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and need to be immediately reversed. We demand immediate release of all public representatives of mainstream political parties and innocent citizens."
