LNG Tanker Violated Arctic Safety Rules

According to NSR MA report ,LNG tanker BORIS VILKITSKY, grossly violated the North Sea Route Navigational Safety Rules by entering Kara Sea, while en route to Sabetta LNG Plant, with serious deficiencies, which reduce ship’s Ice Class and restrict sailing in ice conditions.

Since March 10, the ship has inoperative stern thrusters and port steering column, according to Bureau Veritas report, she can’t navigate in Kara sea either alone, or with icebreakers escort.

The ship, according NSR Maritime Administration, couldn’t enter NSR, but she did sail to Sabetta, and on Apr 16 completed cargo operations, loading LNG shipment bound for France.

Not the ship, nor her manager Dynagas, informed NSR MA on her condition and faulty mechanisms, which is considered as a gross violation in itself.

Dynagas is a Dynagas, Sinotrans, and China LNG Shipping Joint Venture.

Local Russian media already said that “the Chinese sent troubled LNG tanker to Arctic waters of Russia”.

As of 0300 Moscow time Apr 19, BORIS VILKITSKY was still anchored off Sabetta, probably detained.
